The Chat with Las Comadres series are informational sessions by Comadres for Comadres, where we tap into the wealth of knowledge within Las Comadres for the benefit of all.  This month, we will be talking health and how to take care of ourselves.

Speakers:

• Gladys Ayala-Borjas will help you recognize early signs of diabetes and teach you to know your numbers.
• Ingris Garcia will talk food and flavors, and how we can cook healthier without giving up el gusto.
• Nydia Marsella will share Buddhist meditative techniques that help you overcome your obstacles, achieve your goals and become happy.

MARCH 19 --- COMADRES OUTING TO SOFRITO

Many thanks to Comadre Jacklyn Rosa, Director of Artists for Creative Theatre, for the invitation and discount to see Organic Sofrito by Venessa Diaz.  The one-woman show was held at the Flamboyant Theatre, and proceeds went to the Mariafund to help victims in Puerto Rico.

Over 22 Comadres were present to enjoy the show.  Some even had an early supper at El Castillo del Jagua.  (The mofongo was delicious!)  It was a great night, a wonderful show.  Again, many thanks to Jacklyn for the invitation, and Congratulations to Venessa on her grand performance.

And a big Thank You to all the Comadres who attend.

BOOK SUMMARY:  Marissa Cavelo awakens under an alcohol-induced fog and has just minutes to get to a meeting at the television station where she works. She’s sure her career is doomed. Three days earlier, her chaotic adventure begins as a reporter and anchor at KATX-TV in Austin, Texas. While trying to prove to her station manager and back-stabbing co-workers that she is more than a pretty Latina who’s only good for fluff pieces, Marissa stumbles upon a huge exclusive, and suddenly finds herself up against ruthless criminals who’ll do anything—including taking down a news crew if necessary—to keep illegal activities from being uncovered.

 

Besides professional obstacles, she also faces a widening disconnect from her identical twin sister, Carissa. CC as she's called, resents her sister’s growing popularity as a celebrity and is desperate to get out from behind Marissa’s shadow, but what CC is willing to do to forge her own identity is unthinkable.  Through all this, Marissa finds herself sexually drawn to her handsome photographer, Ken. Armed with a bottle of tequila, they come up with a kick-ass exposé in hopes of uncovering Austin’s scandal of the decade.

 

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Olga Campos Benz is one of the most honored anchor/reporters ever to grace the Texas airwaves. A University of Texas graduate, Olga spent more than 30 years covering the biggest news stories in Houston, Corpus Christi and Austin, Texas. She serves on several non-profit boards including the Writers’ League of Texas and as an Advisory Council member of the University of Texas’ Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. In 2013, the Austin Business Journal named her among the “Profiles in Power: Women of Influence.” She is a 2014 inductee into the City of Austin Commission for Women Hall of Fame and the 2015 Distinguished Alum of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Hispanic Austin Leadership Program.

Chatting with Las Comadres: Careers & Job Search

Building A Base

Your Resume/Cover Letter:

1.      Always tailor your resume/cover letter to the position for which you are applying.

2.      Your resume is allowed one page per every 10 years of relevant experience – but should be no longer than 2 pages.

3.      Every bullet point or sentence in your resume should include a success verb.

4.      First paragraph of cover letter is key place to connect with the specific employer – don’t be generic.

Job Search Keys

Strategies To Find A Job:

There are three ways people find jobs:

1.      Job Postings (Indeed.com or industry specific sites)

2.      Unsolicited direct outreach to specific targets with phone follow-up

3.      Networking

If you use networking to support the other two methods, your chances of success increase dramatically.  About upwards of 70% of jobs are obtained because there was a networking connection involved.

Networking:

1.      Networking is not just schmoozing at cocktail parties and it is definitely not asking people you barely know if there is a job opening they can recommend.   Networking is not about instant results, but rather delayed gratification.

2.      Network with a plan and be prepared.

3.      Use the “Professional Coffee Chat” method to grow your network.

4.      Cultivate relationships -- it is when people know you, like you and trust you that they will introduce you to others in their network and let you know about job opportunities when they arise. 

5.      Stay on people’s radar in appropriate ways.

6.      Help others and be a giver – networking is a two-way street.  Connect others in ways that help them whenever you can and you will ultimately reap the reward.

Presenting Your Best Professional Self

Your Materials:

1.      No typos or errors. 

2.      Neat presentation whether via email or hard copy.

3.      Avoid “To whom it may concern” – research who the best person to address it to is.

4.      Professional emails are not like emails you send to a friend – they are still professional correspondence.

Yourself:

1.      Dress appropriately for the type of job and industry standard whether interviewing or attending events where you may encounter other professionals in the field.

2.      Plan to arrive a bit early to interviews – never be late.  Remember that Security Desks/Checkpoints are a reality in our world and leave time for them.  Plan for the “unexpected” travel delay.

3.      Be conscious of first impressions and treat everyone you encounter with respect.
